O'Neill Yea Now No Cord Classic - 2000 Reunion |
| The O'Neill Yea Now No Cord Classic surf contest came back to life in March of 2000 after 5 years of hibernation. That's right - no cord! If you lose you're board; you swim and will have a hard time doing well in your heat. The contest is held at Pleasure Point on the east side of Santa Cruz. The tide was medium low all day and so no boards were sacrificed on the high tide rocks this year. The surf was fun chest to over head WNW with almost no wind all day and was just big enough to make for some long swims. |

Ruffo, Mat Macuda, and Wally made
it throught the first masters round to knock myself out of the running.
I had a tough time getting a good 3rd wave after a long swim. Ruffo
and Mat went on to the finals were Ruffo dominated. My 3 with highest doubled
could not top Wally's 2 with hightest doubled. They used this interesting
way to score that rewards a high scoring wave more. Even though it knocked
me out this time, I like it if it makes for better surfing. |

Adam Repogle surfed well enough to make it through an earlier round on 2 waves; the scoring system definately rewards the better surfing. AR prevailed to the final were he was the man of the day. Peter Mel kept waiting for the bombs that never came while Desmond was catching and backside slashing all the left overs. AR caught all the best waves and signed his name all over them. The weather was beautiful in Santa Cruz this day for the first time in a long time as a lot of old faces showed up and even more new young faces were there to show they can surf without a cord too! |
