March came in like a mouse on the fresh tracks of a lions February that set record snow figures. Leap Day provided a fresh coating of snow after the 2-5 feet Sunday the 27th of February. The first day of March started out clear and cold. We made it to the top of the Summit 6 just as High T and the bowls opened looking smooth and soft. We hiked out to the spines of Beaver Bowl and witnessed some major hucking down the side of the 1st spine. Down Beaver was all love and then traversed high left to the right hand windlips. Rode up the Summit 6 with a family that were enjoying the snow and marveling at the speed and good placement of this lift. They said "Why would you want to anywhere else?". I agreed - with acres of untracked snow just a short hike away and a high speed 6 pack to take you up 2,500 vertical feet - I was in heaven. The hikes can take anywhere from 5 to 40 minutes or longer if you venture into the local backcountry. Alpine is one of the few Tahoe resorts that actually has a sane open boundaries policy. This does not mean you can get away with dipping ropes and go into closed areas. You can go OB when the snow has settled a bit, just be smart and safe or you might face very high rescue bills. |

I took the traverse over to the top of Alpine Bowl chair and made the short hike up to the top of the Keyhole. Clicked in and went through the saddle and dropped boarders right of South Face. Such a good long sustained pitch and perfect snow at the top and skier tracked and a bit sunbaked at the bottom. A lot of people are real fond of hiking/traversing all the way out on the High Traverse to Grouse Rock, but I find that the vertical drop is pretty short for how much time and effort is involved to get out there. Up Sherwood chair and then found a few little powder stashes on Arts Knob and back to the base; the whole 4,000 vertical foot lap took 30 minutes including the hike. 25 minutes till I was to meet my wife, just enough time left for a quick hike to the peak of Idiots and then down the ridge to the virtually untracked sisters. Time for a quick slice of pizza - Hey, the price went up from last year. Hmmrrmm! Still good though! |

Found my wife and friends at summit 6 and went for long lap out to Estelle Bowl. She had been having an even better day than I was; having gone down Idiots, made a lap out to Munchkins, and various other adventures with her skier girlfriends. The snow was still pretty good at the top of Estelle, but became variable as we descended the more southerly faces down to the base. Her friends cut out and so we took 1 fun run down the fall-line from the summit. Then down through hot wheels gully for some banked fun and called it a day. It was one of those days that you felt like you could have done more, but you don't want to spoil it by finishing with a run that is not as good as the previous perfect descents. |
