USASA Slopestyle at Sugar Bowl - February 2000

The weather finally decided to act like winter at the end of January and so Sugar Bowl had enough snow to pile up some nice tables for the USASA slope-style event in February. The weather forecast called for a cloudy sky and snow; but the weather has been even harder to predict than usual this year. It was mostly clear in the morning and the snow that did come in in the afternoon did not slow the event down a bit. Sam Luebke at Sugar Bowl

Frontside grab at Sugar Bowl Roger Carver in the Grommet boys division and Sam Luebke in the Menehune boys both stepped it up with clean backflips on the first table to take home top honors in their respective devisions. Inverted airs are legal in the USASA now if the resort where the competition is being held allows them. It was the word that Sugar Bowl allows inverted airs but would rather not encourage them. So there are not signs saying it is OK to do flips, but it was clearly anounced at the riders meetings. Kimmy Fasani in the Youth women also pulled clean backflips followed by suprisingly small straight airs to win the gold in her division and the top womens score of the day.
Sarah Myers and Colt Wymore rode solid on their way to the top positions in the Junior women and men divisions. Colt had the highest mens score of the event as well. The only competitor in the Master womens was Julie Fifield; she did so well though she probably could have taken my 3rd place finish from me in the Master men if they let her in our group. Mute grab

Josh Feliciano had the second highest mens score and took top notch in the Youth mens. Old man Shaun Craddick in the Master mens (30-39 my age group) of course got gold in the Master mens and 3rd overall score of the day.

These USASA events gives people of all age groups a chance to compete with their peers and still have a grass roots feel, but with over 100 competitors and another 30 or so spectators this event felt pretty Big. Check out the USASA web site for more results and the schedule of events in your area.
