USSF West Coast Championships
In memory of Hoppy Schwartz
78 degree water (F) and fun surf, what more could a surfer want. Well, actually the water cooled down to 74 degrees and the surf really pumped for the West Coast Championships held at Church’s (near San Clemente, Ca) on May 31 and
June 1, 1997. The fog cleared early both days which meant that the wind had to blow a bit from the North on Saturday and from the West on Sunday. The air still felt real warm and sunburns were plentiful. It is a long walk down the beach from old mans if you were lucky enough to get a parking spot. If you don’t get there early (on weekends), you wait over an hour or drive to Trestles and do the 40 minute walk (if you are lucky enough to find a parking spot there).
I do not have the complete results and I don’t think that the USSF has a web site yet, but here are few of the top finishers in there divisions that I can remember.
In the menehune division Peter from Santa Cruz took it all by scoring a 10 from 2 judges on this wave.

Lonny Brothers took the Longboard division.

This girl (Mindy I think) can surf! She ended up 1st in the open women.

Rockin Fig placed 1st in the senior men. Steve Weaver placed 2nd and yours truly collected 3rd.
It was nice to visit SoCal and check out this contest; it was even nicer to get back the pumping Santa Cruz surf. We will try to get the complete results posted here as soon as we can get them.
