Tuesday morning was beautiful with mostly blue skys and a few inches of windbuff on everything. The beginning of the storm had layed down a thick layer of ice before starting to snow, so Shirley could not open until 11:30 and Cyberia opening at 12:30 was a nice afternoon surprise. Which allowed the early season huchers to flock to the Kangaroo Kicker; to bad the clouds came in to make my images gray. The Kangaroo Kicker is a naturally occuring largscale windlip that sends you skyward into a well filled area of soft snow. The only problem is that the landing is pretty flat. If you go large enough to land in the somewhat steeper zone, the Kicker throws you so high that you come down hard. If you go small to medium you land in the flats at the top of the mound anyway. But, it is one of the best early season places to practice what had become rusty over the summer. One note of caution: it is early season and it is common sence to build cofidence gradually to help your odds of having a healthy season. I was sad to see the dreeded red sled needed to take a local skier down after a bad go with the Kangaroo. I will update this section when I have further details on her condition.

November 23rd

The wind howled hard again on Monday the 23rd. It was so strong that the surf was up on Lake Tahoe, trees fell knocking out phone lines (mine included) , and Squaw had to be on windhold for the 2nd time in 3 days of operations.

The wind was raging so hard on Saturday November 21st that Squaw Valley had to postpone their opening for a day. Mother Nature rewarded those who stuck around for Sunday with 6-10 of fresh Sierra windpaste. The visibility was off and on, mostly off. The winds were down and the temperatures mild. The early season stoke was high and so were the risks of damage to body and equipment with the low tide conditions. Everyone should seriously consider wearing helmets. Skiing Image

Yea man, they will finally have a Squaw Cam!
OK it is November and obviously the most urgent news is that:
The Squaw Valley 98/99 Season Opens Saturday Nov. 21st.
Squaw spent a few (million) bucks this summer on new and improved ways to get you up the hill, but that is their job to tell you about that: http://www.squaw.com/
It is no longer an El Nino year; it is now a La Nina year.
It has snowed some already but who knows what weather will come this winter, just think snow everybody!
