Snow Sports Action from the Mountain to Your Computer

Saturday, May 7th 1999
Spring is in the air up here in the mountains which includes warm sunny days mixed with unsettled weather. Most of the last week of April had dust on crust conditions best described as 1-6" of lite new snow on top of a icy or variable base. Every time we get some new snow it cleans the surface again but the snow gets real sticky before it transitions to corn. This time of year that usually only takes 1 or 2 melt freeze cycles with the strong late spring sun and when the over-night temperatures get low enough (below 32F preferably). Tuesday of this last week was actually a blue bird powder day even though not many lifts were spinning. The good news in the minimal lift operations is that there has been several days of melt freeze cycle leaving many acres of untracked smooth corn snow ready for those willing to put in a little bit of a hike. All around there has been some really fun conditions to be had for the hearty soles that are still out enjoying all the snow we still have.
FYI: Squaw Valley is on spring schedule. There are discounted tickets and limited lift operations that run from 8am to 3pm. The pool and hot tube will be popular late in the day after spring halfpipe (Belmont) riding, sessioning Granite and Shirley, or hiking out to acres of fresh sun baked corn snow.

This is the best time of year to enjoy the uncrowded slopes of Squaw Valley and get to ride while wearing minimal amounts of clothing. The sun is super strong this time of year, so please feel free to wear lots of sunscreen.
