Spring Jam II

The weather got real nice for the weekend as many local and a few international contenders waxed up for BoarderX and Big Air competitions. The warm temps played a big factor in the BoarderX races as well as the Big Air because coming up short meant landing 10 to 15 feet high to flat (not recommended).

The Skier Big Air comp on Saturday had to be delayed until the landing was softened (it was to hard due to over salting). The fact that they did not get started until 4pm did not discoure the very large crowd that formed to see the human hucking show. The digi, 16mm, and 35mm camera person circus under the jump was so intense it was barely productive as we jockeyed around getting in each others shots trying to get "that" shot.

The official Squaw Valley personnel were there trying to keep all those eager beaver lense-man out of the line of fire for the skiing event but were not present for the snowboarding Big Air so a few brave (or crazy) videographers were running and ducking near the landing zone; hope that up close footage comes out good for them. The jump was indeed Big Air - 12+ foot jump launching competitors over a 40+ foot judging/photog deck hopefully onto their feet on to the steep landing zone. Going 35 feet was not a pretty picture; all short comers landed with a thudd, grown, and yet they survived OK (other that being an inch shorter). Only one competitor in the snowboard competition needed a moment to catch his breathe as ski patrol looked over him after landing on his back, at least he landed in the transition which allowed him to get up and walk down under his own power with tail between legs.
