Snow Sports Action from the Mountain to Your Computer

Friday, April 16th 1999
Well, spring is back in the air up here in the mountains after winter made a brief revisit last week. The new snow was super fun all last week and through the weekend which allowed the ski patrol to open the Chimney (Palisades) on Monday morning.

The east wind was blowing briskly which packed the snow into a fast windbuff texture and also slowed the decent of the talented bunch of riders that charged this rarely open extreme pitch. This kind of wind also makes getting air born a lot harder as it blows up the hill and plays with any huckers skis and even more with snowboards, so most choose lines that kept themselves on or near the surface of this super steep exposed slope. It is amazing how good these people are; of the 40 or 50 descents that I saw, nobody got hurt and only 2 or 3 fell after clearing all of the exposure.

The sun has been out all this past week and the temperatures have been warm so the snow surface has transformed into spring corn. This makes for fun snow sliding as the sun moves across the sky and melts the overnight freeze into soft fun. The Riviera halfpipe has been really fun and popular with over a hundred patrons enjoying the fun in the sun on Monday. Riviera chair has not been running though, so most have been hiking the halfpipe instead of using High Camp chair. Night skiing is over and KT22 will close at the end of this month (it will close with more snow than it opened with). It is sad that as another big snow season comes to an end; the ticket buying public loses interest in skiing and boarding. They crowd the roads and parking lots on winter weekends when it is cold and the days are short; but as the sun rises and stays higher in the sky the low land masses start to forget about how much snow we still have up here. This is the best time of year to enjoy the uncrowded slopes of Squaw Valley and get to ride while wearing minimal amounts of clothing. The sun is super strong this time of year, so please feel free to wear lots of sunscreen.
