USASA Halfpipe Contest and GS Race at Sierra at Tahoe

Saturday, another early morning drive while watching the full moon set and the sun rise. There was a lot of clouds lingering along the Eastern side of the Sierra early on, but the sun shined and warmed the day nicely. The wind blew a little so waiting for your turn was chilly with the 109 competitors having to take 2 runs each. The pipe looked a bit narrow, but after a practice run we all found that the sugar snow at the bottom of the trany was real slow. Did not seem so narrow until I waxed and managed to generate more speed. The printer/computer was acting up again, so hand writing the start sheets delayed the start until about noon. With the late start and plethora of contestants, they had to do booth runs back to back. The last run was well after 3pm, so the awards and raffle did not start until after 4:30. Some of the usually very nice Sierra staff were pushing the stragglers out the door before we were done with all our business and schmoozing.
Scott Peterson in the open class scored the highest run of the contest (80). Since it was booth runs combined, Dan Macoy in the junior men class topped everyone with 2 solid runs (78.3+78.66=158). Sean "turtle" Tedore and Aden "smiley" Rusfeldt took 2nd and 3rd overall and in the senior men class. Jill Preston took 1st out of all 1 of the youth women. She also took 1st of all the women. Sanae Iijima placed 1st in the master women and 2nd overall. Shalia Buxton collected 2nd in the master women class.

Sunday, the morning's weather started even more cloudy and cold with light snow flurries. The race course was pretty firm Northeast facing (cold but good carving snow). The course had good flow and held up well for the 63 competitors. It seems the course setter had some problems with the management getting up the hill early to get things all running. So there was not much time to slip the course between the set and the start. Unfortunately Woodie Allen of Gardnerville suffered a possible dislocated knee from freak accident at the starting gate (he slipped ok). All of our best wishes to Woodie for a speedy recovery. (3-1-97 word has it that no major surgery was required, but he will be healing for some time. Get well soon Woodie!!!)
They ran booth runs back to back and had the awards and raffle by 2:30.
Rocky Allen in the open class had the fastest run and fastest combined time. Kyle Frankland took 1st in the master men division and 2nd overall. Bill Smaine placed 2nd in the master men and 3rd overall. Lisa Odynski placed 2nd in the open class (!!!), 1st overall, and had the 4th fastest time of the day. Michele Brach placed 1st in the master women and 2nd overall. Sanae Iijima took 2nd in the master women and overall. Jeff Ching took 1st in the legend men over myself (2nd), closing the gap for one of the many points races to get to nationals.
