USASA Slalom Race and Halfpipe Contest at Donner Ski Ranch

February 15 + 16
by CyberWill
The weather was extra warm on Saturday and warm on Sunday for the haflpipe contest. With only 43? racers, booth runs of the the race went so quickly that we were done by 1:30. They decided to have the raffle and awards at 4pm, so we could go ride the sunny terrain of Donner Ski Ranch on this very nice day. They had the raffle and awards out on the deck in the fading light and warmth. The raffle had really good odds because there was all kinds of prizes and there was only 43 racers. I came away with a Pro-Tec helmet as did a several others. One of the grommets won the raffle snowboard thanks to the benevolence of the Airwalk; who has given USASA NorCal/Nevada a board for every event.

Top Results for Saturdays Slalom

Rocky Allen from South Lake Tahoe schooled everyone (as usual); except for maybe Kyle Frankland who lead the 1st run and only trailed by only 1/2 second combined. Sanae Iijima set a steady pace to get the fastest womens' combined time. Michele Brach took 2nd in master women and overall.

A few high clouds and some light winds kept the temperature down some on Sunday. The sun warmed the snow in the less than perfect 10-14' halfpipe enough to allow some of the competitors to go rather large. Cameron Beck had his run DQed for getting inverted without dragging his hand. My camera battery died just before his run or I would have caught an image of the offending move (would have made a nice shot). The Donner Ski Ranch staff did a great job helping the whole program go with out much trouble on the backside of the mountain. Even the printer, computer, and copier were all working, so here are some of the top results.
