Checks Out BBC 1999
| Here is the news release from Sierra at Tahoe: Great weather, snowboarding and music help make the fourth annual boarding for breast cancer a success April 18, 1999- South Lake Tahoe, CA -- Under blue skies and on top of snow depths up to sixteen feet, Sierra-at-Tahoe hosted the fourth annual Boarding for Breast Cancer (BBC) snowboard and music festival presented by Polo Sport on Saturday, April 17. The event is dedicated to increasing breast cancer awareness among American youth. Favorable weather and snow conditions combined with great snowboarding and music helped attract more people than previous BBC events and met the fund-raising goal of $100,000. The Breast Cancer Fund, The Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Nina Hyde Center for Breast Cancer Research will receive event proceeds. All three are national non-profit organizations that raise awareness and funding to fight breast cancer. Funds are raised from ticket sales, sponsors, donations and on-site raffle and product sales. John Rice, General Manager of Sierra, commented on the resort’s commitment to the event, “This was by far the best event since it’s inception four years ago. Perfect weather, abundant snow, high energy music and some of snowboarding’s top riders made for a very successful day for breast cancer research support.” Approximately 5,000 people attended the fourth annual festival at Sierra. Celebrity event host, Kennedy, from MTV kept the crowd entertained in between live performances by Peter Distefano, Stephen Perkins and Mike Watt, former members of Porno for Pyros, Ozomatli, Less than Jake, the Alkaholiks, Blink 182 and Spearhead. Guest speakers, Jeanne Peters, from The Breast Cancer Fund, and breast cancer survivor, Sarah Latham, age 35, were available on-site at an awareness pavilion. Other event highlights included halfpipe and big air competitions by top professional snowboarders. In the men’s pro halfpipe competition the top three finishers were Kirk Warner in first place, Jef Billo in second and Mikko Jauhiainen, third. Kyla Duffy won the women’s pro halfpipe competition with local South Lake Tahoe resident, Kristie Elder-Ussher in second and Lindsay Pugh, third. In the men’s pro big air competition Mike Basich was the winner with Aaron Rains in second and Cyrus Briggs, third. In the women’s pro big air competition Tina Basich, Lindsay Pugh and Sally Szymaniak took first, second and third respectively.
